Idesi Immigration Update – August 2024
There have been a number of changes in Immigration field for August 2024. Here are some of the highlights.
Visa Application Fees
As discussed in a previous blog – visa application fees are set to rise. Some fees by more than double. Anyone thinking of making a visa application – please remember the 1st of October which is the day when these changes take place.
Transit Visa Changes
Most people applying for a Transit Visa will now be able to do this online without having to submit a paper application form. This change will make it much simpler for people transiting through New Zealand on the way to another destination. Chinese nationals are the only exception but it is expected to change soon.
Transit Visa Changes for Fijian nationals
In the same announcement- Fijian nationals have now been added to the Transit Visa waiver list. This means that Fijians will now be able to apply for a NZETA which is much simpler to apply for than a Transit Visa. However Fijians will still have to apply for an appropriate visa to visit, study or work in New Zealand. Fijians travelling through Wellington or Christchurch will still need to apply for a visitor visa because neither of those airports have transit facilities.
Specific Purpose Work Visa Changes
A new subcategory of Specific Purpose Work visa have been announced. The change is concerned with seasonal peaks in industries impacted by weather such as tree planting or the Ski season. The work visa is for 9 months and the closing date for making applications is 31 March 2025.
Visa Classes Revoked
In its recent INZ Amendment Circular a number of visas have been revoked. Including the old points based instructions for Skilled Migrant Category. The H5 Special Covid visas have been revoked. Another of the signs of the post-Covid era – like working from home and being nice to health workers which has now passed.
